Confidential Israeli data indicates that the largest portion of incarcerated Palestinians from Gaza who died in prison were ordinary citizens, per a simultaneous examination.

Some deaths in confinement have been high profile, such as a 50-year-old healthcare leader who perished in confinement after a third of a year in detention.

A detainee held with the individual reported that he was led to the yard by prison staff immediately preceding his demise, clearly wounded and unclothed from the hips downward. His remains has not been repatriated to Gaza.

Other prisoners who lost their lives in Israeli custody remain anonymous. Correctional authorities and armed services provided investigators with the figure of fatalities in custody, and limited other details including the location where they died, but without the inmates’ personal details.

Recognition Difficulties

Regarding 21 occurrences, primarily people from Gaza, investigators could not to match the few details supplied by officials to a death recorded by human rights groups, via testimony from freed prisoners or reporting in the news outlets.

The detainees’ families may not know about their loved ones’ deaths also, as Israel has created obstacles to track Palestinian individuals it is detaining. Over half a year at the outset of the hostilities, the armed services declined to provide essential data about the status of thousands of individuals held in Gaza, practically implementing a practice of forced disappearance, as stated by the rights monitoring body.
